Chinatown - a tale of two streets

IMG8620rs.JPG

Midday on Sunday, August 26, Jason, Chris, Kernan, Thomas and Fred  took the campaign to Chinatown for its Sunday Streets event. Entering thru China Gate at Grant and Bush, they were soon deep in tourist country.  Grant Avenue is the apex of San Francisco's "visitor's" Chinatown. However, despite all the trinkets and hundreds of non San Franciscans, the shops were  owned by true residents of the district and they showed real interest in Jason.

Having campaign cards in Chinese clearly was key. When residents spotted them, they almost always were receptive.

Looking down, it was clear that, tourist or resident, this was very friendly country.

Perhaps it was early or perhaps because of its dominant tourist nature, Grant Avenue was not packed.  Toward its north end, its character changed.

The campaign turned onto Sacramento Street and visited Anson Kee's photography shop.

Mr Kee is well-known in the Republican community. His shop is full of pictures of himself with prominent Party figures.  He showed many of his pictures and happily took one of Jason's campaign signs to post.

After this pleasant interlude, things changed as the intrepid group turned onto Stockton Street.  Click on Jason’s sign below to join along.
